Bridges to Stem Cell Science Master’s Program

SFSU CIRM Bridges Science Master's Program (2022 - 2026)

Based on SFSU’s proven track record in training a diverse student population for successful careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields and decade-long record in building partnerships with premier neighboring research institutions and major constituencies in the Bay Area life science industries, SFSU Bridges to Stem Cell Research and Therapy program since 2009 have supported 120 students, including first-generation students and students from underrepresented groups, for successful careers in stem cell biology, regenerative medicine and emerging life science workforce. By capitalizing on the dynamic collaboration with partners in academia and industry and the innovative curricula already instituted at our university, it is the goal of this application to renew the Bridges 2.0 program under Prop 14 to continue preparing talented and motivated students for successful careers in the biomedical workforce. SFSU CIRM Bridges Science Master’s program aims to admit 50 students to a two-year MS-Biomedical Science program. It provides interdisciplinary courses in science, technology, business and a project-based year-long internship, which focuses on inclusive and comprehensive training, structured mentorship, professional development opportunities and enrichment opportunities. The program will increase the number of competent science graduates, particularly students from diverse and disadvantaged groups, with the competencies to promote advances in stem cell, regenerative medicine and STEM fields.

SFSU CIRM Bridges 2.0: Training the Next Generation of Stem Cell Scientists Program (2017 - 2021)

SFSU is a large, urban university serving a highly diverse student population. SFSU’s California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Bridges program is a two-year master's level training program in stem cell biology. SFSU stem cell training program has been funded by CIRM since 2010. The program supports 10 master’s-level trainees annually with a year-long fellowship that includes 12 months stipends, tuitions, stem cell techniques training, travel and research supply funds.

Currently SFSU Biology Department is submitting a renewal application for a new CIRM EDUC2 RFA under Prop 14. The trainees will be accepted into Master of Science in Biomedical Science, Concentration in Stem Cell Science (Science Master’s Bridges Program). The Stem Cell Science Master’s Bridges Program aims to prepare competent and committed laboratory professionals for both academia and industry to accelerate the discovery, development and delivery of stem cell, gene therapy and related technologies for improving human health. The Science Master’s Bridges Program provides additional course work in business and is tailored towards students interested in pursuing a position in the biotechnology sector or advanced academic training upon graduation. In the first year of the program, CIRM Science Master’s Bridges trainees will take core courses at SFSU to build a strong foundation in stem cell science. The second year of the program, funded by the CIRM fellowship, is devoted to trainee’s internship research project using stem cells and/or gene therapy at one of our host institutions or affiliated stem cell companies across the Bay Area. At the end of their second year of training, Science Master’s Bridges trainees, completing a final master project report written in the form of a manuscript as well as an oral defense, will become competent ‘ready-to-start’ life science professionals.
